What was the motivation behind this idea? Your own pet?

Many of our ideas for themed investments come from our personal environment. Topics that you can identify with, trends that you support yourself or the pet that you have. My rough-haired dachshund “Norbert” inspired me a little, as I myself invest a lot (sometimes perhaps a little too much) in the well-being of my dog, be it leads, baskets, bowls, food, grooming or nutritional supplements, the list is long.

When it comes to the pet industry, many people probably think of dogs and cats first. But what does this branch include?

The pet industry is as diverse as the pet species. Dog, cat, bird, snake, fish – they all need … food! That’s the first association you make with this question, and it’s entirely plausible. But that’s not all. The pet industry also includes suppliers of animal care and hygiene products, animal toys and veterinary medicine. It also includes insurance for dogs and mice and their training.

The pet industry is considered a growth market. During the coronavirus crisis, it had a strong boost, the situation is currently but rather mixed. How do you assess the current situation?

During Corona, there was a real boom in the pet market. The so-called “Corona-
puppies” came into households and for a long time the little fur balls thought people only existed with protective masks. However, just like the boom in the DIY market, this boom also came to an end, or rather a breather. Experts still see growth in this market and the momentum is likely to increase over the next few years.

Where do you see the potential for the future? How much growth is still in the bowl?

On the one hand, studies conclude that the number of pets worldwide will increase in the coming years – and with it the expenses for our animal companions. On the other hand, the life expectancy of pets is increasing, which is due to constantly improving healthcare. According to a study by Morgan Stanley, spending in the US pet industry will grow by an average of 7% per year until 2030. According to Morgan Stanley, growth in the pet industry would thus exceed that of almost all other retail sectors.

What social or demographic developments do you think are driving in your opinion are driving growth in the petpet industry?

Pets are no longer just seen as an addition to the family, where, for example, a hamster is acquired to teach children responsibility. For some, pets are also a substitute for children. In Japan, the pet population has just overtaken that of children under the age of 4. This trend is also emerging in China: Goldman Sachs predicts that there will be twice as many pets as children under the age of four in China by 2030.

Do pet owners tend to buy price-consciously or quality-oriented?

According to a study by Morgan Stanley, the average annual expenditure per pet in the USA in 2024 was USD 1,155. The total volume of the US pet industry is estimated at USD 164 billion. Europeans spend a similar amount on their animal friends. According to the industry association FEDIAF, spending on pet food alone amounts to around EUR 30 billion per year.

Can you briefly describe how the Solactive Pet Industry Index is composed?

The Solactive Pet Industry Index is calculated and published by Solactive AG. It comprises stock corporations that are active in the various segments of the pet market. These include companies that specialize in pet food, for example, as well as suppliers of pet care and hygiene products, toys and other pet accessories. Companies that specialize in veterinary medicine, pharmaceuticals and diagnostic solutions for pets, as well as pet insurance companies and other service providers (e.g. training, wellness) can also represent index components.

How are securities selected within the index? According to which fundamenta or quantitative criteria are used to whether a company is accepted or not.

Possible titles are identified by a language algorithm that scans company profiles and publications in the predefined possible index universe. The algorithm searches for suitable companies using keywords that describe the index topic. Of these, 20 companies are selected on the basis of a ranking. This ranking also determines the weighting in the index. The index is reviewed and rebalanced twice a year in order to keep the strategy in line with the market at all times.

What role do sales shares in the pet segment play for inclusion in the index? Are there threshold values?

To be included in the index, stock corporations must fulfill certain criteria. For example, there must be an average daily trading volume of at least USD 1 million in the share. The weighting in the index is based on an algorithm that assigns a score. This shows how strongly a company is associated with the keywords. Companies with a higher score therefore also receive a higher weighting in the index.

How topical is the subject of AI in this area? And if so, can you give us some examples?

Artificial intelligence is now ubiquitous. One example in the pet market is smart pet toys. These toys are equipped with sensors so that they can interact with pets, react to their actions, monitor their health or even track their behavior. So it’s no longer just about throwing a ball, but also about Bello’s mental well-being.

Thank you very much, Ms. Sparenberg.

__

Vivien Sparenberg
Head Flow Products Distribution Switzerland, Bank Vontobel AG

Vivien Sparenberg has been working for Vontobel since 2015.
